Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
Describe it in 25 words or less. The sequel to “The Shining” explores the tumultuous life and dark secrets of Daniel Torrance and his troubled journey towards self realization.
Any particular reason for choosing this book? I read The Shining about 25 years ago (just prior to watching the movie) and I’ve been wanting to read this as soon as I heard about it’s release.
What did you think of the cover art? I had the UK/AU cover that had the cat on it, which I actually prefer over the USA first edition cover.
Who was your favorite character and why? Abra, because of her courage and determination.
Who was your least favorite character and why? Rose the Hat, because she was so cruel and callous.
Did it grab you immediately or did it take a while? The story grabbed me immediately and only became more intriguing as it went on.
Was it plot or character driven? An excellent balance of both in which they become reliant on each other.
What did you think of the ending? Left me with emotions of both hope and melancholy.
What was the moral of the story? Ultimately it is best to reveal all your secrets.
Did you learn anything? A little about RVs and Alcoholics Anonymous.
Favorite quote: “The world has a way of keeping things in balance. I believe that. There’s a saying: when the pupil is ready, the teacher will appear. I was your teacher.” – Dick Halloran to Dan Torrance
Have you read other books by the same author? I’ve read most of Stephen King’s novels from the 1980s and some of his short stories too.
Would you like to see it adapted into a film? I wouldn’t mind seeing it as a film. I would pick Sam Riley as Dan Torrance.
Soundtrack: You can have a listen to the songs mentioned in the book on Grooveshark.
Who would you recommend it to? Anyone who has read The Shining, as well as fans of Stephen King or science fiction/horror. Definitely read The Shining first.
