My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf

MyFriendDahmerx-large

Describe it in 25 words or less. A memoir about serial killer, Jeff Dahmer from the point of view of a high school friend (acquaintance).

Genre: Graphic Novel/Memoir

What did you think of the cover art? Brilliant. Derf Backderf’s illustrations are awesome in their simplicity.

Who was your favorite character and why? Mike, only because he seemed to be the most level headed.

Who was your least favorite character and why? Figg because he was such a trouble-maker and very inconsiderate and mean.

Did it grab you immediately or did it take a while? It grabbed me immediately and I read it in one sitting.

Was it plot or character driven? Very much character although great lengths were undertaken to provide an accurate sequence of events.

What did you think of the ending? I already knew enough about Jeff Dahmer not to be shocked, but the book left me feeling a little nauseous and troubled by how bizarre human behavior can be.

What was the moral of the story? Don’t abandon or ignore those in need and saying or doing nothing can be sometimes be very damaging.

Did you learn anything? A large amount of insight into the life of Jeff Dahmer.

Favorite quote: “WHERE WERE THE DAMN ADULTS!?”

Have you read other books by the same author? Not yet, but I plan on reading Punk Rock & Trailer Parks (available here).

Would you like to see it adapted into a film? The rights to the book have been purchased but I’m not planning on seeing the film adaptation.

Soundtrack: Check out the songs mentioned in the book on Spotify which includes The Voidoids and The Michael Stanley Band.

Who would you recommend it to? Crime novel and graphic novel fans, however I would caution anyone who reads it that it may leave you feeling deeply disturbed.
