Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
Describe it in 25 words or less. A teenage girl creates an unusual suicide note.
Any particular reason for choosing this book? I suspect it’s a form of regression therapy for me when I read YA.
Genre: Young Adult Literature
Who was your favorite character and why? Tony because he was compassionate and observant.
Who was your least favorite character and why? Hannah because she gave up and then blamed other people.
Did it grab you immediately or did it take a while? Was it worth the wait? This book is immediately intriguing, but I got frustrated waiting for the “reason” that would make me feel something other than infuriated with Hannah. >
What did you think of the ending? I thought it was weak and unfinished.
What was the moral of the story? Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Favorite quote: “No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes,we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same.” – Hannah
What would you change? I would have liked to see Hannah make more of an effort to reach out to someone.
Would you like to see it adapted into a film? Any ideas on casting? I saw that it was optioned in 2011 and Selena Gomez has been cast as Hannah. I would be very interested in seeing if her reasons are changed at all in the film version.
Soundtrack Recommendation: You can listen to Hannah’s tapes here.
Who would you recommend it to? To adults who want to better understand where teens are coming from and to anyone who thinks no one cares.
