We Have Always Lived In The Castle by Shirley Jackson
Write 6 words you would put on this book if it were in the “Blind Date With A Book” shelf. Sisters, Rumors, Poisons, Mental Illness, Discrimination, Fear
Any particular reason for choosing this book? I’m reading scary/creepy books for the month of October and Shirley Jackson came highly recommended.
Who was your favorite character and why? Uncle Julian because he was honest.
Who was your least favorite character and why? Charles because he was greedy.
Did it grab you immediately or did it take a while? The beginning was very intriguing, but it went nowhere and I was sorely disappointed when I got to the end and that was all there was to it. At least it wasn’t a long book and it didn’t waste too much of my time. I will not be reading any more of Shirley Jackson’s work especially after Pete’s review of her book The Haunting of Hill House.
What did you think of the ending? Anticlimactic with too many unanswered questions.
What was the moral of the story? Your happiness in life is all in the way you look at things.
Did you learn anything? A bit about poisonous substances.
Favorite quote: “What are you reading, my dear? A pretty sight, a lady with a book.” – Uncle Julian
What would you change? I needed more from the paltry plot.
Would you like to see it adapted into a film? I think it could only be improved by making it into a film. Maybe take the basic plot and then flesh it out a bit more.
Who would you recommend it to? Anyone who has ever been shunned by their community or family as an example of what NOT to do.
