Brigette Reviews Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Describe it in 25 words or less. A teenage boy discovers a whole new world when he realizes he’s a peculiar child.

Any particular reason for choosing this book? I am trying to read creepy/scary books for October, but I had very few books that fit that description on my TBR list. This was one of the few and despite the many terrible reviews, I went ahead and read it.

What did you think of the cover art? I was really drawn to the cover art and then realized that all the photographs in the book are real photographs that people have found over the years. I thought it was genius to write a book around them.

Who was your favorite character and why? My favorite character by far was Jacob. I have never read a teenage male that I liked so much. He’s the kind of kid I’d want as a son.

Who was your least favorite character and why? If I told you, it would ruin the story.

Did it grab you immediately or did it take a while? I was immediately intrigued and it was one of the best books I’ve read in a while. The characters were all really well written, the storyline was original and interesting and I found it just the right amount of scary.

What did you think of the ending? I thought it was perfect.

What was the moral of the story? Go with your gut. Don’t let other people talk you out of what you know to be true.

Favorite quote: “Yes”, he said, “but what an unchallenging life it would be if we always got things right on the first go.” – Dr. Golan

Have you read other books in the series? I plan to read the sequel, Hollow City, next October.

Would you like to see it adapted into a film? 2Oth Century Fox has the rights to the book and is looking to have Tim Burton direct. I really think something will be lost in the translation to film.

Who would you recommend it to? I think only someone who was a sensitive child plagued by nightmares will really understand why this was a scary book.
