Pete Reviews Scott Pilgrim

Scott Pilgrim (Volumes 1 – 6) by Bryan Lee O’Malley

Write 6 words you would put on this book if it were in the “Blind Date With A Book” shelf.
Music, Relationships, Youth, Video Games, Fighting, Toronto

Any particular reason for choosing this book? After watching the film that I loved so much I’ve always wanted to read the Scott Pilgrim series.

Genre: Comic (Graphic Novel)

Who was your favorite character and why? Ramona Flowers because of her shoes.

Who was your least favorite character and why? Gideon (not the cat) because he was psychotic.

Did it grab you immediately or did it take a while? Grabbed me immediately, the style of the comic is so simple that I think anyone can relate to it.

Was it plot or character driven? Characters established early and the plot kicks in toward the end.

Favorite Quote:
Wallace Wells : “Does this mean we have to stop sleeping together?”
Scott Pilgrim: “Do you see another bed in here?”

How does the book compare to the film? The film is slightly different in regards to plot, but they are both excellent entertainment value.

Song/Soundtrack recommendations. All three chords to one of Sex Bob-Omb’s songs are in Volume 1, which I though was cool. Bryan Lee O’Malley plays a bit of bass guitar so I’m sure they are legitimate. The Pixies were mentioned too, so extra points for that!

Who would you recommend it to? Comic book or video game fans.

Architectural Detail: Casa Loma was my favorite of the many choices. I especially loved the trivia/facts thrown in with the major landmarks.

Beer pairing: Mad Tree Brewing Company’s Pilgrim Pale or, if you’re a big fan of Ramona, try Elevation Beer Company’s Wild Flowers
